The factory Bosch Motronic Air Flow Meter (AFM) found on these Porsches was a reasonable solution for its time, but its design comes with real limitations. The AFM measures incoming air using a spring-loaded door connected to a potentiometer. At low RPMs and partial throttle, where the door is barely open, this mechanical restriction is at its worst, dulling throttle response and making the engine feel sluggish and unresponsive right where you feel it most. At wide open throttle, the AFM cannot accurately read airflow at all, forcing the ECU into a rich, safe-running condition to avoid knock. The engine never truly gets out of its own way.

The Rennline x Storch VE MAF Conversion Kit solves this permanently. By replacing the AFM with a modern hot-film Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, the same technology Porsche moved to in the early 1990s and what has since become the standard for nearly all modern vehicles, the intake restriction is eliminated entirely. The MAF measures air electronically with no moving parts and no throttle valve, giving the ECU accurate airflow data across the entire RPM range. The result is sharper throttle response right off idle, stronger power and torque where you actually feel it, cleaner and more efficient engine operation, and approximately 2.5 kg of weight savings over the factory unit. Full altitude correction for air density compensation is included.

Unlike other conversion approaches that require chip tuning or custom modifications, this is a true plug and play installation. No calibration required.

FAQ

Q: Do I need a chip tune or ECU modification to run this kit?

A: No. This is a true plug and play conversion. The kit plugs directly into the factory wiring harness with no calibration, chip tune, or ECU modifications required.

Q: What is the difference between an AFM and a MAF sensor?

A: The factory AFM measures air using a spring-loaded mechanical door, which creates a restriction in the intake. A MAF sensor measures air electronically using the hot-film principle with no moving parts and no restriction, providing the ECU with accurate airflow data across the entire RPM range.

Q: Will this affect engine reliability or longevity?

A: The MAF sensor is completely wear-free due to its electronic measuring principle, and it provides the ECU with accurate airflow values that prevent any unnecessary strain on engine components, unlike the factory AFM which can force the ECU into an overly rich condition at wide open throttle.

Q: Who makes this kit?

A: This kit is manufactured in Germany by Storch VE and co-labeled with Rennline. Storch VE specializes in AFM to MAF conversions for classic Porsche and European vehicles.
